Janet is the owner and director of the Movement Integration (MI) Studio, York, UK; North Yorkshires largest and most comprehensive Pilates and Clinical Somatics studio and Authorized Training Center for Balanced Body Pilates Teacher Certifications. She is the founder of Sweat-Equity, a comprehensive distance running organization and has been a fitness professional, coach and movement teacher for over 30 years in both the US and the UK.

Janet has practiced Pilates since 1988 and it was during her studies in Physical Therapy at Texas Women’s University that she decided to pursue a career as a Movement Practitioner. Janet is certified by the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), Polestar Pilates International, studied Classical Pilates with the Pilates Standard and is a Master Instructor and Member of the Balanced Body University Faculty. She holds a BA from the University of North Texas and post-graduate Diplomas in Biomechanics and Human Movement, as well as being an Advanced Sports Massage Therapist. Janet is a Clinical Somatics Movement Therapist and in 2014 was the first to introduce Clinical Somatic Movement classes to the York Market.

Janet provides Balanced Body instructor training programmes in Pilates Mat and Reformer and apparatus such as Trapeze, Ladder Barrel and The Pilates Chair and relishes opportunities to share her passion and broad knowledge through mentoring and supporting others. In addition, Janet delivers workshops and seminars in Pilates, Somatics, and functional movement as well as running group and private Pilates, Somatics and reformer sessions .

As a former middle distance runner, Janet’s knowledge of the body, posture, and biomechanics enhances her work as a teacher, educator and movement practitioner. Janet’s passion for her work is infectious and her desire to enable clients to develop a deeper sense of awareness through movement, strength, flexibility and freedom of movement is inspiring.

Karen began her Pilates journey in 2006 after she had a riding accident, which left her with a broken back. She tried Pilates as part of her recovery and has never looked back; Pilates has truly transformed her life. In addition to her comprehensive mat training with The Pilates Standard and reformer training with Balanced Body, Karen’s teaching involves the foundation of Pilates training from Polestar Pilates International

Her love of Pilates led Karen to find Somatic Education, the “missing piece of the puzzle” for her in moving freely and relieving pain. Her passion for Somatics led Karen to complete teaching training through Clinical Somatics, and she is thrilled to currently be completing her Clinical Somatic Education training with the Clinical Somatics team. Karen teaches group and individual Somatics classes as well as private clinical sessions. Come and join her if you want to relieve stiffness and pain and move freely!

Liz Martin

Liz M
A classically and progressively trained Pilates Instructor. Gaining Comprehensive Certification with Alan Herdman for Pilates mat-work and for all small equipment and Apparatus: Reformer, Cadillac and Tower, Ladder Barrel and Pilates Chair. Alan was my choice to be tutored by for who he is having met him, but essentially the quality of the course and his “pedigree” as a second generation instructor who initially learnt from two instructors taught by Pilates himself! and his vast knowledge of rehabilitation.

Like so many instructors it was injury through an accident that brought me to Pilates. Having tried traditional physiotherapy and more, I remained in pain, unable to do the sports I had always loved. My saviour was a highly skilled acupuncture practitioner who managed to help me release the intense muscle spasm in my body, and discovering Pilates which helped me maintain this release but also strengthen.

I now could not imagine ever not doing Pilates! it helped me return to the activities that I love, but be even better as I am completely aware of technique and can apply Pilates principals.

After 10 years of personal practice I decided that I would like to pass this wonderful technique to others. Further certification has included: Balanced Body Ballet Barre, Pink Ribbon Program certification for breast cancer rehabilitation and for muscle and myofascia release.

I enjoy working with a diverse clientele, any age, any gender.

Liz teaches group reformer on Wednesday evenings, She is also available for 1:1 work.

Alice Shuttleworth 
Alice’s interest in Pilates began when she worked in a Centre For Positive Living. Alice recognised the benefits of Pilates in her increased flexibility, improved posture, strength, less aches and pains and a mindful feeling when she exercised. She decided to train as a teacher in 2010 to spread the word of positive movement patterns for a happier life and pain free living. Alice trained with Polestsr Pilates and is a Certified Balanced Body Reformer Instructor. She  has done extensive work with adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, proving that Pilates really is for everyone.
Alice has worked with pre and post operative Hip replacement clients and helped many clients recover and build strength. Her calm and friendly approach, sense of humour and passion to assist her clients is refreshing and holistic in her approach.
Alice builds her programmes to suit her clients needs and help them achieve their fitness goals.
Alice covers Mat and Reformer classes and is available for Reformer 1 to 1 by appointment Thursday’s at MI Pilates 10:00am, 11:15am 12:30 pm 1:45
£40 for an hour.

Sarah trained with Body Control Pilates Mat and Certified with Balanced Body Reformer Pilates.  Sarah Teaches on alternate Fridays 1:1 Tuition.

Liz Holmes
Liz’s passion for Pilates started 20 years ago when, as a fitness instructor, she took part in a Pilates workshop in London with Polestar. From then Liz developed her knowledge and experience, qualifying with Polestar and launching her own classes around Bristol as well as offering one to one Pilates therapy within an osteopathic clinic.

Success delivering classes led to opportunities to manage group exercise programmes and then health clubs and spas. This led to Liz’s teaching taking a bit of a back seat for a number of years while she developed her career as a Spa Director and National Head of Spa for Virgin Active. Liz still heads up her own spa consultancy company but is keen to achieve that work-life balance we all strive for by getting back to her passion for Pilates.

Liz is really delighted to have met Janet in York at just the right time when she is keen to get back to teaching and welcome both new and existing clients to the studio for her Monday morning reformer class (8am).
